Bold women certainly existed in the Middle Ages--Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales is evidence of this--but meek women were probably the norm, good Christian family ladies who wanted nothing more than to serve God and have children. Her own pack was so light that she left it in the locker. I think that a boarding-house is the very best place for a woman who wants to develop her sense of humour.
