FOREWORD Forever Fifteen was born of a dream I had in 2002, a dream that was part nightmare. “I was lonely. Gerald smiled and crooked his elbow. Jack was completely overcome. I was his wife. He saw her eyes pass him and settle on a fleetingly pretty strawberry blond girl and her effeminate father. It wound around a small manufactured lake. She kept him talking all the way to the doorstep of the Beck's home, a small 1970s brown split-level in the old part of town. Inexplicably there flashed into vision the Chinese wedding procession in the narrow, twisted streets of the city, that first day: the gorgeous palanquin, the tomtoms, the weird music, the ribald, jeering mob that trailed along behind.
